It’s funny how some people stick with you
Not because of anything they said
In fact, you probably couldn’t quote them if you tried
But something about the way they made you feel
That part stays
Long after the talking has finished
I’ve been thinking about this a lot lately
All the people who have come and gone in my own life
Conversations that felt so important at the time, but now I couldn’t tell you the exact words
What always stays with me is their energy
The comfort
The awkwardness
The spark
The enthusiasm
The way some people make you feel like you’re the only one in the room
It can be from those first moments with them
The initial chemistry
Their humour
or just the way they saw the world differently to you
Maybe it was their optimism for what’s to come
Or their struggle to believe that anything good was ahead
Whatever it was, they left something with you
And maybe they didn’t even realise it
That’s the strange and beautiful part
We don’t always know when we’re making a mark on someone
And most of the time, we don’t realise it’s happened to us until much later
You find yourself thinking of them at random, fleeting moments
A certain song plays
You walk down a certain street
You hear a phrase that sounds like something they used to say
And suddenly they’re there again
Not physically, but emotionally
Not because of what they told you
But because of what they showed you
About the world
About people
About yourself
Some people walk into your life and quietly hold up a mirror
They reveal parts of yourself you hadn’t noticed before
They awaken something
A hope, a fear,
Or a part of your identity that had been sitting quietly in the background
And even if they don’t stay, that part of you does
That feeling
That visceral sensation of their presence
And even if they don’t stay, that part of you does.
That’s what makes memories so powerful
They’re not just about them, they’re about you.
What you felt in that moment said something about where you were in life
What you needed
What you were learning
And sometimes, what you didn’t know you were capable of
People don’t just pass through our lives
They shape them
With no one else around
Life would be meaningless
They remind us how good it feels to be seen
They teach us what it looks like to be kind for no reason
They show us where our boundaries are
Or where we forgot to put them
Some people hold space for us
Others stretch it
Some lift us up, others teach us hard lessons we didn’t ask for
But all of them
In some way
Leave their mark
And the most powerful thing is, often, they weren’t trying to do anything at all
They’re existing in their reality as much as you are in yours
It’s often not grandiose gestures to be seen
Not a grand speech or life-altering advice
It’s their presence
Their tone
Their timing
The way they move through life different from you
The way they looked at you when you were nervous
The way they listened without rushing to respond
The way they treat people when no one is watching
These are the moments we carry
A collection of these fleeting moments that leave such an impact on us
Not because they were loud
Because they were real
The beautiful part is
Most of the time we don’t even realise we’re in those moments while they’re happening
It’s only when we look back that we see how quietly significant they were
When the dust has settled
Their impact on you reveals itself
Like others have left their imprint on us
We do the same
Every day, without even noticing
The way you smiled at a stranger
The time you gave someone your full attention
Asked questions about them
You listened
The moment you made someone feel welcome when they were on the outside looking in
That’s the
It will stick with that person
The impermanence of words are made timeless by feeling
We’re all moving through the world
Trying to figure it out as we go
We collectively have this quiet power to leave people better than we found them
Not by saying the perfect thing, or having it all together
But by being honest, authentic
being present, being kind
You might never know the role you played in someone’s story
How a simple gesture from you became a memory they carry years later
But maybe that’s the whole point
We’re not here to be remembered for our words
We’re here to make people feel something while they’re standing in front of us
So if there’s one thing I’ve learned
From all the people who have walked in and out of my life
It’s that feeling that lasts longer than anything else
How you made someone feel might be the most lasting thing you leave behind
