How to not give up on your dreams (Even when they’re really hard and feel far away)

Safety feels comfortable, but meaningful dreams are found outside that zone. Everyone’s path is unique, and the challenges you face are an integral part of the ride.

“And this is your desk here.”

He ushered me to sit down on the budget swivel chair in front of me

“If you need anything else, just come find me,” he said as he walked away

I pulled my chair in and turned on the monitor in front of me

My heart started racing as the reality around me set in

I stared blankly at the screen as the dull hum of the office filled my ears

A few desks away, someone was typing aggressively, like they were fighting for their life

The printer whirred

A phone rang

Someone chuckled half-heartedly at a joke that wasn’t funny

This was it

This was the scene of my grand defeat

I imagined my younger self looking at me with complete horror

“Really? This is what we grew up for?

I was now the latest cog in the corporate world

A far cry away from where I wanted to be

Sitting in this shitty office in Mulgrave wasn’t on my original vision board

I’d never felt further away from my hopes and dreams

But the thing about dreams is that they’re completely and utterly your own

No one else will care about them as much as you do

No one else will wake up in the morning and fight for them

Which, in a way, is liberating because it is your sole responsibility to keep them alive

I knew from that moment that I had grander plans than small talk around the instant coffee machine

Every moment since that day has been my attempt to realise the life I want to live

Dreams are invariably like the indoor plant in your room

if you don’t give them the attention they deserve

They’ll wither away, sitting there lifeless, collecting dust

You don’t need to wait for the perfect moment to water your indoor plant—if you do, it’ll probably be dead by then

Instead, it’s the small, consistent efforts that keep it alive and thriving

The same goes for your dreams—nurture them bit by bit, and they’ll start to come to fruition before you know it

For me, there were two choices

Accept my new life and live the next 50 years in hidden misery

or go the unconventional path and pursue the life I genuinely wanted

I chose the latter

Every day is a slow progression towards the life I want to have

A life lived on my own terms

Everyone will have their own version of what this means

So

If you’re feeling stuck or trapped or feel like your life is on a never-ending loop

Here are 5 reasons not to give up on your dreams (even if everything is really hard)

Accept that it’s supposed to be hard (that’s the point)

It’s supposed to be hard

If it wasn’t, everyone would do it

Chasing something that’s meaningful to you may end up being the hardest thing you ever do

You’re signing up for uncertainty, setbacks, and moments where you question everything

There will be people in your life who don’t understand

They will tell you to be realistic and subtly (or not so subtly)

Remind you that you could just take the safer, easier route

You’re walking up a river, facing resistance with every step

But that’s the point

The well-trodden path might be safe, comfortable, and predictable

But it’s also someone else’s path

Following it means living a life that was designed for safety, not fulfillment

If you’re reading this, I’m assuming you don’t want that

Don’t compare your chapter 2 to someone’s chapter 20

Ah, social media.

No other technology has ever given us such a front-row seat to the top 0.01% of human achievement

While simultaneously making normal people feel like we’re failing at life

But here’s what I’ve learned:

No one, and I mean no one, gets a free ticket

The price of chasing your dreams is your old life

The one where you played it safe

Worried about what people thought

or let fear hold you back

You are where you are for a reason

Just because someone else is further down the road doesn’t mean they’re more talented, smarter, or somehow chosen by the universe

It just means they started earlier and never stopped

And if you never quit, you can’t lose

Everyone endures the period of struggle

People you look up to, Brands you wear, athletes you love

All have their own version of this

Their progress doesn’t diminish yours

It just means they started earlier or kept going longer

The only difference between them and you is time and persistence

Keep going, and your moment will come

You are going to be bad in the beginning

One of my favourites

Nobody starts out great at anything

Your first attempt at anything

Whether it’s making videos

Starting a business

Writing

or even putting yourself out there in a new way

It’s probably going to be terrible

You will be clunky, awkward, and probably nervous

That is the point

That is invariably the process of becoming better

When you learned to ride a bike

You wobbled, you fell

Maybe you even crashed into a bush at the end of the street

But it didn’t make you give up riding a bike forever

Of course not, you got back on and got better and better

The same rules apply to learning new things

The early stages are messy

Your first 100 videos might not get any views

Your first business might run out of money

Your first attempt at anything will not be your best work

The only way to get good is to keep going through the bad

One day, you will look back on your old work and laugh at how far you came

No One Cares as Much as You Think They Do

In a world where millions of things are happening every second

People are navigating their own ups and downs

Dealing with their own dreams, failures, and problems

Your next post, your latest decision, or even your next big move is probably not the top of their mind

It is harsh, but it’s extremely liberating once you grasp this

Worrying about what others are thinking

It’s assuming everyone has their eyes glued to you

Like you’re the star of a reality TV show

In reality, everyone’s too busy starring in their own show to notice yours

Instead of letting this fear of judgment paralyze you

Use it as motivation to take risks, try new things, and put yourself out there

The more you worry about what others think

The more you’re allowing their opinions to hold you back

Once you realize people are just living their lives and are probably not paying as much attention to you as you think

you’ll free yourself to just, do

Remember, everyone is navigating their own story, just like you

People are wrapped up in their own struggles and growth

Don’t waste energy worrying about how they see you

Dreams don’t expire

There’s no age limit on chasing what excites you

Some people hit their stride at 22, while others find their passion at 50

Colonel Sanders was 65 when he founded KFC

Ben Francis was 19 when he started Gym Shark

The timeline doesn’t matter

What matters is that you don’t let self-imposed deadlines trick you into thinking you’re “too late” to pursue something meaningful

The truth is, some people only find their purpose years after they thought they’d missed their chance

You’re not behind

Your journey is your own, and it will unfold in its own time

The moment you stop comparing yourself to others and their timelines

You free yourself to chase what truly excites you

No matter where you are in life

So, whether you’re starting something new at 25 or 55, know this

It’s never too late to pursue what lights you up

The timeline for your dreams is completely yours to define

Just because someone else has already taken the leap doesn’t mean you missed your chance

If you’re starting something new

Be kind to yourself

There will be days of doubt and moments when you question whether it’s too late

Remember this,

The people who inspire you didn’t stop because of a number on a calendar

They didn’t stop because their first 50 videos didn’t get views

They didn’t stop because their friends said they shouldn’t

They kept going, and so can you

The people who don’t wait for permission to write their story are the ones who make history

Final thoughts

You don’t have to have everything figured out today or tomorrow or even next week.

Honestly, the road to where you want to go isn’t going to be a straight line

No one gets dealt a full hand

It’s messy, unpredictable, and sometimes frustrating

But that’s okay

That is what makes the human experience, and that’s what makes it special

If there is no struggle, there is no journey

So, if you feel like you’re taking the long way

or you’re hitting a few roadblocks

That’s actually a good thing

It means you’re on the right track

Keep moving, keep learning, and keep embracing the chaos

That is the only way

In the end

It’s the hard days that make the good ones so much sweeter

Don’t stress about not having it all figured out yet

Just keep showing up

Keep going even when you don’t want to

You’ll get there when you’re ready
